Lenore is believed to be the expired spouse of Poe and holds the focal component in this sonnet. The account sonnet starts on a horrid night of December, where the darling is viewed as worn out and feeble. Recalling his dead darling he encounters apathy and attempts to conquer this by redirecting his regard for an old book. As the storyteller is seen feeling at anxiety and frail, he hears a tapping on his chamber entryway. He comforts himself that a guest may have tapped the entryway to look for haven and that's it. Once upon a 12 PM horrid, while I contemplated, frail and exhausted, Over numerous an interesting and inquisitive volume of overlooked lore,†While I gestured, almost snoozing, abruptly there came a tapping, As of somebody tenderly rapping, rapping at my chamber entryway. â€Å"‘T is some visitor,† I murmured, â€Å"tapping at my chamber door;Only this and that's it. † (The Raven 112)Since the start of the sonnet, the peruser can feel the vibe of death encompassing the storyteller. The utilization of â€Å"I† is the sonnet shows the anonymous storyteller being dreadful and aggravated as he depicts the sound in rather negative term â€Å"rapping†. As indicated by TheFreeDictionary, the word relates to a progression of fast perceptible blows so as to stand out. This rapping sound created as the storyteller depicts makes the storyteller mindful of his environmental factors more and starts to fear for himself. Storyteller likewise utilizes â€Å"gentle† which depicts one more distinct perspective, the delicate tap made the storyteller mindful of his circumstance thus enough had the option to react to it. The storyteller additionally shows his disturbed nature: â€Å"T is some visitor,† I murmured, â€Å"tapping at my chamber entryway/Only this and nothing more.† Narrator presently proceeds onward to recollecting his lost adored Lenore. The past has surfaced again when the storyteller moves into flashback, feeling distress for having lost his adored forever:Ah, particularly I recall it was in the somber DecemberAnd each different passing on coal created its apparition upon the floor.Eagerly I wished the morrow;â€vainly I had looked to acquire From my books delay of sorrowâ€sorrow for the lost Lenore,For the uncommon and brilliant lady whom the blessed messengers name Lenore: Nameless here for evermore. (The Raven 112-113) Here, storyteller utilizes â€Å"bleak December† to imply cold, and therefore demise. The absolute first line makes an origination of death as cold and unfaltering in the reader’s eyes. Nothing lives in the winter, for the individuals who live goes into hibernation till the winter outperforms. December is the period of winter. This represents passing as cool, unforgiving and bigger in extent. The cold of winter clears out the glow easily as the storyteller clarifies it as â€Å"dying ember†. This withering ash produced the flashback of his cherished and this thusly imparts the storyteller to consider his beloved’s passing. He considers her the â€Å"fair maiden† whom the heavenly attendants removed, leaving storyteller miserable and distressed in property. To outperform his distress, he looked for asylum in books: â€Å"Eagerly I wished the morrow; â€- vainly I had tried to acquire/From my books delay of sorrowâ€- distress for the lost Lenore. Presently storyteller moves to open the entryway, dreading, lamenting, and thinking about that it may be Lenore that looks for entrance in his chamber. The delineation of this dread is uncanny, the storyteller shows his inward dread which excites in him awful yet awesome revulsions that he has never felt. This uncanny disposition towards death is apparent of the idea of Poe. Poe views demise as an unavoidable idea in this account sonnet. The abhorrences that the storyteller faces are depicted through the melodic impact of smooth purple window ornament, miserable, unsure stirring of purple shade, storyteller is presently unnerved of this sound and consoles himself that it may be some guest who looks for entrance at his chamber entryway. From the underlying idea of death as an inescapable marvels, the change has made demise creating dread inside storyteller. Religious Beliefs of Greeks and Early Jews free essay sample

A comparison of the ritual life of the ancient Greeks and early Hebrews. This paper analyzes the differences and similarities between the ways in which Greek religion was tied to Greek political beliefs and practices and the ways in which Hebrew religious beliefs and practices were linked to social conventions and cultural values. It can be seen that many of the basic forms of worship as well as the basic conception of piety and religious worth that are evidenced in both Judaism and Christianity are based on (or were at least influenced by) the religious beliefs and practices of the Hellenistic world, and so we should not be surprised to find similarities between the beliefs of the Greeks and the Hebrews. However, it is important to remind ourselves of the differences as well, some of which come about because while classical Greek religion is now preserved in time as an insect in amber, Judaism has changed to meet the demands and riches of life in the modern world (Smith, 1958, p. Love Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Love - Term Paper Example It wasn’t the love that I thought it would be. At that point I realized that they were talking about artistic love. The love that an artist holds for what he sees and feels like capturing the moment using his abilities, no matter how he does it. â€Å"It has been said that art is a tryst, for in the joy of it maker and beholder meet.† Kojiro Tomita. And at the same point I was forced to think of Eros as a materialistic lover. What if he loved what was on the outside and not on the inside. And there I thought of him as selfish. Because I feel that outer beauty has nothing to do with what is inside. It is just like loving a thing because it is a pleasure to the eye, a luxury and nothing more, just like love for materialistic things. â€Å"Contentment is natural wealth, luxury is artificial beauty.† Socrates. I read further then and when I read that Eros is neither a god nor a man, he is not mortal and neither immortal but a ‘half-way spirit’, one sugge stion came to my mind, ‘maybe he is an angel’. ... These were to define Eros. Eros as an angel must have loved something else entirely. And I realized I had got it all wrong. Reading further I found out the Eros was the son of gods of craft and poverty which must mean that he knew both the states of having everything you wanted and then losing everything you had. He must not have experienced the feelings in between and when I moved on further it was revealed. The writing showed exactly what I had thought. Eros was stuck in between ignorance and wisdom. And wisdom is to know better. Being the definition of love for beauty, at a personal level, Eros loved beauty too. In an entirely different way, he had love for wisdom, love for knowledge that would enable him to see things in a beautiful manner. â€Å"The cave you fear to enter holds the treasures you seek.† Joseph Campbell. Moving forward, the text was defining Eros as we like to use it. Eros or love can be on two different levels, spiritual love or physical love. The images I had in mind when reading this were really different from each other. The first one held a bright light to it, hard to tell of what but maybe of spirituality, of connecting or dedicating yourself to the higher powers. The second one gave me an image of affection; two people, loving each other, holding each other in their arms. And the text mentioned that physical love resulted as mortal children and at that point I got to thinking that spiritual love is not only the love for higher powers or amidst. What do we call the love we hold for elders, our parents or siblings? And the text made me realize that such love was also a form of spiritual love. â€Å"Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that.† Martin

Losses jobs during the recession Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Losses jobs during the recession - Essay Example Daily there is rapid shedding of jobs. There is a very sharp fall of oil and crop prices. The most affected are the people who do not have a college degree. There is a fall in construction work, retail market in addition to hotel work. Home investors and home owners have suffered great losses that cannot be compared to the social security checks that renters and retirees depend on (Leonhardt, 2009). El Centro city in California State has been adversely affected by the great depression as referred by others. About 22.5 % of its population has suffered from the cruel hand of unemployment. El Centro has not only suffered from the brutality of recession but also from drought. Housing problem has also joined the two troubles the state has. House helps have not escaped the axe of unemployment. Many employers have opted to take their children who are very young to avoid having baby sitters. Those mothers that are no longer employed would rather do the house work than employ house maids. All these developing trends due to the recession are resulting to inequality. The great depression crashed the stock market. This affected the wealthy and the middle class families greatly. Additionally, more people lost jobs and more are on the verge of losing top and well-paying jobs. For example, the study by Leonhardt (2009) reveals that the recession affected the Wall Street employees and so a large percentage of them lost their jobs. In a bid reduce inequality, the Obama administration has taken a stem that franklin Roosevelt took during the 90s depression of increasing the taxes of the wealthy. Critics point out that increasing tax on the rich will only benefit one side, the poor. This step had enormous effects. The third key thing is very important because unlike during the great depression, students do not to leave school to work as labourers in different places. They will pursue education that will in turn help in curbing the loss of jobs during recess. As mentioned

Multicultural backgrounds Essay Example for Free

Multicultural backgrounds Essay Both of these poets John Agard and Sujata Bhatt write poems about their multicultural backgrounds. In John Agards poem half-caste he starts off with Standard English. But as he goes on through out the poem he uses Caribbean dialect. His poem is about his feelings towards being multicultural. He feels angry, sad and is questioning his audience. In Sujata Bhatts poem search for my tongue she has many feelings about her mother tongue and how she doesnt want to lose her first language. She is feeling sad because she thinks she is loosing her mother tongue but it comes back in her dream and she feels happy again. John Agard was born in Guyana but moved to England in 1977 so he has lived in England for 30 years. John Agard finds the term half-caste insulting and wants people to know how he feels about being mixed raced. Sujata Bhatt is like John Agard because she was born in India but moved when she was young. Sujata Bhatt moved to the United States. This is where she learned her English. She married a person from Germany, where she later then moved to. She wrote this poem search for my tongue because she was afraid of loosing her mother tongue Gujarati. In half-caste John Agard demonstrates a lot of emotions. He is angry in his poem he says ah rass this is a term of discust. John Agard is being ironic when he says I offer you half a hand you would expect him to offer you a whole hand. How can you offer half a hand? John Agard is also trying to be humours, when he refers to things as half. Like the English weather yu mean when light on shadow mix in de sky is a half-case weather John Agard is trying to put across that the English sky is never one colour its a mixture of colours like blue, white, grey. This links in with his multicoloured background because they are different colours just like he is. Sujata Bhatt also uses a lot of emotions in her poem. Sujata Bhatt feels sad when she says If you had two tongues in your mouth, and lost the first one, the mother tongue she feels like she didnt get to know her mother tongue and feels sad that she dont know her first language. Sujata Bhatt thinks that her mother tongue would not come back to her in the first part of the poem. So the first two stanzas of her poem are about her sadness. However when she realises her mother tongue is back she feels happy it grows back, a stomp of a shoot she is feeling pleased that she can remember Gujarati again. Sujata Bhatt felt that she had lost her mother tongue forever but when she realised that it came back she was relieved that she still knows Gujarati. No one would want to there mother tongue. The tone in John Agards poem half-caste is said in an angry tone. John Agard is warning those people who call him half-caste, as John Agard finds the word half-caste offensive. John Agard says explain yuself wha yu mean its as if someone as called John Agard half-caste and he wants to know the reason why they have called him half-caste. John Agard is thinking that being half-caste doesnt mean he should be called something different. Through out the poem John Agards tone does change. He starts being perplexed. He has given the audience reasons in which being half-caste is such a beautiful thing. Like Picassos paintings when yu say half-caste yu mean Picasso Picassos paintings are colourful and bright. In Sujata Bhatts poem search for my tongue her tone is sad. As he thinks her mother tongue has gone. Through a long period of time her tone is sadness. However after the Gujarati Sujata Bhatts tone changes. Her tone becomes happier as her mother tongue comes back to life the bud opens, the bud opens in my mouth her tone becomes a happier. This style of tone carries on. Sujata Bhatts tone changes just like John Agards tone. They both start off in a sad way but as the poem progresses the tone changes to a more happier tone.

The Caribbean Identity Essay -- Culture Caribbean History Cultural Ess

The Caribbean Identity The way in which Benà tez-Rojo and Mintz tackle the question of Caribbean identity in their articles, is a removed, objective ideal, in contrast to Michelle Cliff’s portrayal of Jamaican identity. Cliff’s portrayal touches the heart and soul of Caribbean identity. While Mintz and Benà tez-Rojo are investigating trends in the Caribbean as a whole, from an outside perspective, Cliff offers the personal, tactile imagery of what it is to live in the Caribbean, utilizing the objective account of history as a background. Furthermore, Cliff deals with Jamaica, one island in the Caribbean, while Mintz and Benà tez-Rojo are dealing with the Caribbean on a grand scaled overview. The fact is neither article can be taken as complete truth. In fact, although Cliff uses history in her novel, I believe the account of history from someone who has completely accessed the interior of a place, is always going to be biased. Likewise, Mintz and Benà tez-Rojo in making their hypothes es, are lacking an insider’s view. It is the difference between a Caribbean person and Caribbeanist, respectively. Therefore, while on a logical level, an analytical level, Benà tez-Rojo and Mintz’s, conclusions as to Caribbean identity could rightly be accepted, these two authors do not possess the experience and intensity to make me as a reader, convinced of their conclusions. Benà tez-Rojo and Mintz do utilize imagery in their texts. For example, Benà tez-Rojo quotes E. Dovergier as a manner of displaying with images what he has attempted to explain regarding rhythm as being the unifying factor of Caribbean culture. Part of this description reads, "the buyers buzz around like a swarm of flies; they haggle, they gesticulate, they laugh, they babble ... ...er, it seems to be in Jamaica specifically, the elite and ruling class are never going to understand what it was like to be a slave or possibly never admit that it was wrong to encourage slavery. Those who were slaves or relatives of slaves, understand the horrors associated with slavery and will not be able to forgive completely the naivity and self involvement on the part of elite in continuing slavery. For as Clare says, although emancipation eventually came, as well as official freedom of Jamaica from Britain, there is no essence of complete freedom. Mark Twain’s work, Life on the Mississippi River

Literary critics admittedly point out that there are many themes which run along Mark Twain’s work, Life on the Mississippi River. However, there is always schism as some critics point out that Twain’s works were rife with thematic undertones which were mainly bereft of human ideals such as justice, equality, suffering and tragedy. These critics maintain that given Twain’s leanings towards atheism, he possesses more compunction to delve on moralist ideals. On the other hand, there are critics who point out that Mark Twain’s themes straddle both moralist and non moralist matters, irrespective of his leanings on religious matters. Nevertheless, it is lucid that humanitarian and moralist themes run along his work, Life on the Mississippi River. This paper therefore seeks to establish the veracity of this standpoint. Introduction The book entitled, Life on the Mississippi River is Mark Twain’s memoir that detailed the days he spent as a Mississippi River steamboat pilot in a period anteceding and succeeding the American Civil War. Mark Twain opens the book by giving a short description of the Mississippi River from its point of discovery by Hernando De Soto in 1542. The book continues with Mark Twain’s anecdotes relatable to Twain’s training as a steamboat pilot, according to his own words, the â€Å"cub† of an expert pilot. This book that greatly describes his affections and the science behind navigating the dynamic Mississippi River was initially published in 1876 under the title, the Old Times on the Mississippi. The fact that there are sundry and ominous themes that run deep in this book is portrayed in the fact that the second part, does not constrain itself to describing Twain’s return to travel from St. Louis to New Orleans on a steamboat after many years; but on the contrary, thematic and emotive topics akin to greed, tragedy, gullibility and bad architecture run deep in this work piece. This paper therefore takes to dwell on the themes of tragedy and greed as they run along dominantly in this book, Life in the Mississippi. First off, the theme of tragedy appears in the book’s sample of the authorâ€⠄¢s missive to his sister- in- law, Orion. The book, mentions that five days prior to the composition of this letter, an explosion occurred in a steamboat which had carried Mark Twain’s younger brother, Henry. This development that took place in Pennsylvania left Henry heavily injured. Mark Twain who would have been piloting with his brother, save for some circumstances, was in Memphis, reunited with his brother Henry two days after this explosion, and for six more days, nursed him when he succumbed, being one among the hundreds who perished in the exploitation. According to Fishkin (1998, 121), the theme of tragedy plays strongly, being depicted by the author as that which is inevitable, and as such, no effort can be concocted to avoid it. The inevitable nature of tragedy is clearly brought out by the fact that Mark Twain had a month earlier, already foreseen his brother’s death in a well detailed dream. In almost the same wavelength, the book through the author advises the readers on the way tragedy should be met. The above reality is clearly depicted by the fact that despite the pain of bereavement and guilt that bore heavily on Mark Twain’s mind, he put on a brave face, and continued to work in the river as the river pilot- a feat that was extirpated in 1861 when the American Civil War broke out. This is because the traffic within and along the Mississippi was severed. Similarly, the author depicts the normal nature by which the pain of tragedy is met. Herein, Mark Twain is left subject to intense feeling of guilt and pain, due to the feel that he did not do enough to nip his brother’s death in the bud. It is while in the midst of this emotional turmoil that Mark Twain ventures into the field of parapsychology, deviating from his former involvement in the Society for Physical Research. Kruse (1991, 75) maintains that as the author, Mark Twain does not make a dereliction of the concept and practice slavery. This book presents Missouri as a historical slave state for the South, being represented by in the Federal and Confederate governments at the time of civil war. In a sketchy depiction, Twain intimates of he and his comrades having been volunteers for the Confederacy up to closely two weeks. At the same time, it is this issue of slavery which acts as the hotbed from which the American Civil War springs. Likewise, relatable tragic concepts such as the suffering and the exploitation of the slaves who are mainly blacks comes to the attention of Union, though the South warms up to it as it remains very lucrative; as it is tantamount to free labor. Tragic it is that scarcely did many farmers and small scale industrialists see the need to accord slaves, the African Americans whom they regarded as their mere chattels, with decent domicile, sufficient victuals and proper vestments, leaving alone a pay for any work done. It is by this depiction of the contradictive lifestyle between the slave owners in Missouri and their slaves that Twain presents the tragedy of human avarice that would have human beings exploit their fellows without any remorse. In a cleverly calculated artifice to show his disdain for this exploitation through slavery and his depiction of it as a practice doomed for failure, Twain depicts this as the crux of the antithetical stance that the Unionists and Southerners had towards each other; with a war christened, The American Civil War being the culmination of this affair; the South greatly loosing and the door for the total proscription of slavery being opened (Twain, 2004, 99). Again, in a cleverly packaged stylistic approach, Twain revisits the theme of tragedy and suffering as being caused by war, even the American Civil War. It is no secret that Twain speaks of himself generatively so that in his sufferings, he has the ability to represent the painful experiences of many others. A case in point is Mark Twain’s self depiction of a youthful individual who had grown up along the precincts of the Mississippi River where he also earned his livelihood. Nevertheless, Twain’s life and means of livelihood is interfered with by the war as he is one of the many who are forced to abandon the steamboat pilot career with the advent of the war. It is only after two decades that Twain returns to the Mississippi River, only to be met with wide scale changes that have materialized in the area. At this juncture, apart from the socio- cultural changes that have taken place, the tributaries of the Mississippi River have undergone transformation too. Similarly, Mark Twain like many others returns to find remarkable persons who have all become an integral part of the nation’s forgotten history. The above situation means that forever; lives along the Mississippi River had undergone an irrevocable transformation as families remained severed from their members; while others had their professions and means of earning a living extirpated as the tributaries of the Mississippi totally changed. All these occurrences are attempts by Mark Twain to depict the tragedies that the American Civil War bequeathed the Americans- tragedies which were so pervasive, cutting across all the spheres of life: social, economic and cultural spectra (Pettit 2004, 161). In almost the same vein, the theme of avarice tampered with concepts of tragedy remains rampant in this piece of literature, with the former being seen to be the causative agent of the latter. Watkins (2004) maintains that in a picturesque manner, Twain mentions of the technological developments which were materializing in the US at the time, such as the development of the steamboat, which spurned the boat construction industry. Running concomitant with this development was the radical changes and efforts to ameliorate the railway system. Although all these developments sparked off industrial developments, the unfortunate development that came alongside this was the dingy, shoddy and substandard constrictions which Mark Twain recounts as having caused massive numbers of deaths. Twain depicts the poor and pronto constructions which were hurried through with the need to rake in quick lucre as being the prime reason behind the sad situation. Again, tragedy plays along here, as these poor constructions which were greedily hurried through, collapsed, claiming the lives of many innocent. Conclusion It is therefore clear that the theme of tragedy plays along in Twain’s book with matters akin to anthropocentricity taking the center stage. This is because, beyond the reporting of the practices which directly compromised human rights, the real need behind the writing of the novel was meant at mirroring the society so that ameliorative socio- cultural and economic practices could be welcome. At this juncture, it is therefore easy to see that core matters which are relatable to human ideals such as equality for all claim center stage in Twain’s writings.

Where Do New Words in English Come From

Have you ever experienced textpectation? According to the Urban Dictionary, thats the anticipation one feels when waiting for a response to a text message. This new word, textpectation, is an example of a blend or (in Lewis Carrolls more fanciful phrase) a portmanteau word. Blending is just one of the many ways that new words enter the English language, and more new words are being invented constantly! The English language has developed over centuries, and many of the words we use today have come about from one of two overarching sources: evolving words from English or English-adjacent languages themselves, or deriving from loan words from other languages. Some of those adapted words, called cognates, still sound similar to the words in other languages that theyre related to, but this isnt always the case - false cognates, or words that sounds like they should be related in meaning but actually arent, can trip up even expert writers. In fact, most new words are actually old words in different forms or with fresh functions. We often think about word formation as something that happened centuries ago, but in fact, its something that continues to this day. Language is constantly evolving and expanding! As some words fall out of fashion and into obscurity, others come into being, often because of highly specific contexts of time and place. This process of fashioning new words out of old ones is called derivation  Ã¢â‚¬â€ and here are six of the most common types of word formation: Affixation: Over half of the words in our language have been formed by adding prefixes and suffixes to root words. Recent coinages of this type include semi-celebrity, subprime, awesomeness, and Facebookable. From a logical perspective, affixation is probably the type of new work formation that is easiest to figure out or to use to create new words in casual speech. It relies on the fact that these suffixes or prefixes have known, stable definitions, so they can be attached to any existing word to layer their meaning. Affixation may create official, formal words as well as slang. Back Formation: Reversing the process of affixation, a back-formation creates a new word by removing an affix from an already existing word, for example liaise from liaison and enthuse from enthusiasm. The logic of forming these words often follows established patterns of grammar and word structure, making them fairly predictable in their creation. Blending: A blend or a portmanteau word is formed by merging the sounds and meanings of two or more other words. Examples might include Frankenfood (a combination of Frankenstein and food), pixel (picture and element), staycation (stay and vacation), and Viagravation (Viagra and aggravation). In many (though not all) cases, words that are created via blending are slang words with a certain element of tongue-in-cheek playfulness. In the case of words like staycation, they may even combine two words with seemingly opposing meanings. They may also involve puns or other wordplay (for instance, Frankenfood makes play on words by stitching two words together, just like Frankensteins monster is stitched together from separate parts). Clipping: Clippings are shortened forms of words, such as blog (short for web log), zoo (from zoological garden), and flu (from influenza). In many instances, these clipped words will overtake their words of origin in popular usage, to the point where the original words or phrases become obsolete. No one calls a blog a web log anymore, and although influenza is still a valid medical term, common parlance is to simply call that particular family of viruses the flu. Compounding: A compound is a fresh word or expression made up of two or more independent words: office ghost, tramp stamp, breakup buddy, backseat driver. Phrases like these will create a new, specific image separate from their individual parts, often with highly specific connotations or figurative language. A backseat driver, for instance, refers to a person who tries to direct or advise the driver of a vehicle, often to an annoying degree, figuratively driving from the back seat. Conversion: By this process (also known as functional shift), new words are formed by changing the grammatical functions of old words, such as turning nouns into verbs (or verbing): accessorize, party, gaslight. Much like back formation, the formation of these words tends to emphasize known grammatical conventions.

The Ugly Young Age Of Age Essay - 1205 Words

About a month ago I did not notice anything out of the ordinary in my everyday life on the subject of gender. Yes there have always been jokes about the women’s place being in the kitchen and men getting all sorts of privilege, but I never really thought too hard about it because it was never anything new. Once my attention was brought to this subject and I was told to delve deeper into the super weird societal gender norms, my eyes were opened to so many new and fairly disturbing occurrences. It was actually quite overwhelming. I did not know how to process everything and in a way my mind wanted to reject these happenings because it just seemed so sick and twisted, but I was accustomed to all of it and frankly, I did not want to be wrong or change my way of thinking. Fortunately, it was inevitable and I notice these bizarre gender labels and stereotypes everywhere I look from now on. Especially in my marriage. I was married at the astonishing young age of 17 which does no t help my case for gender stereotypes. I am now labeled as that naive girl who let a man take control of her life because I â€Å"thought† I was in love. Of course I do not see any truth in that, but I do see truth in several other gender stereotypes. My wifely duties are the typical do the laundry, cook dinner, and clean up the house. It is well known for Nike to outsource almost all its production from third world countries at che ap prices and sell them in U.S. market at an abnormal profit. The company began outsourcing its products from Japan where labor was competent and wages were very low. The living standards were raised which prompted Nike to outsource its products from Thailand, Pakistan and Indonesia since wages in these countries were extremely low and labor for these products were competent due to rapid development of the Japanese economy. The outsourcing of footwear products from Asian countries enables Nike to earn high profits and enjoy a competitive advantage over its rivals in the footwear industry. The company invests the high profits realized in marketing its products through celebrities. How far did conditions improve for Black Americans between 1945-1955 free essay sample

The decade following up to WW2 there was general hostility towards Black Americans, lynching’s and beatings were quite common in the Deep South. Due to the huge amount of volunteered/conscripted black Americans who joined to fight for ‘liberty and freedom’ in Europe, many also fought the war of liberty and freedom at home. When black soldiers returned majority were still met with the same segregation and racism that they had felt when they left. However you could see some improvements in political, social and economic conditions for them; largely achieved through a combination of federal measures, supreme court decisions, and black activism. But there were clear limits to this progress due to powerful forces such as white racist attitudes, congressional resistance and lack of executive commitment. Conditions Improved a) Political The way the black soldiers had fought had changed a number of people’s views, including President Harry S. Truman, whom was known for being racist, understood that there were social developments in place and the black population began to have a voice such as organisations like the NAACP. Immobilised Black American soldiers were given the chance to have a college education and they had took advantage of this, they had also been treated like heroes in Europe but were unequal in the USA- Truman saw this was injustice and though they shouldn’t be subject to racist attacks, which made them more motivated to take action. In connection to this, there was increased awareness of southern inequality due to more motor cars and televisions becoming more accessible, so campaigns were mobile and more recognised. His reaction to this was â€Å"the buck stops here† meaning he was determined to get equal human rights for all citizens. The extent to which his motives were questionable as it can be argued he was well aware the black vote was of growing importance for the Democratic Party, so he knew he needed to gain their support. However having the President on side was a great step to making black and white citizens equal, and was one of the key steps to success for the Civil Rights movement, the other two being a Supreme Court and congress with pro-civil rights majority in the US constitution. Truman took government action to help black people. In 1946, Truman established the President’s Committee on Civil Rights; they produced  a report â€Å"To Secure These Rights† which examined racial minorities in America, so that they could address these issues. Such problems included lynching (over 300 reported cases from 1882-1945), police brutality(barbaric beating, forced confessions when innocent), voting rights (in 1944 only 18% of black people in the South could vote), employment, education and healt h ( black people were paid less that whites even if educated, and medical schools refused to take black students and they had less doctors). The summary was that segregation was causing many problems, â€Å"separate but equal† did not exist as blacks did not receive equal treatment, and were seen as inferior to associate with white people. Truman also appointed William Hastie as the first black judge in relation to making opportunities fairer in employment and education. He also appointed Ralph Bunche as the American Ambassador of the United Nations; he mediated between the Israelis and Palestinians and won the Nobel peace prize for this in 1950. These government appointments impacted the psychology of the black and white citizens, they could all see that black people were beginning to get high positions of power and authority; this in turn would help secure more democratic black votes, as their fair opportunities were being shown to increase. He also recognised that black campaigners such as Philip Randolph were telling soldiers to not go to war due to how they were treated, and he used his power to desegregate armed forces, under an exec. Order 9981 which guaranteed â€Å"equality of treatment and opportunity for all†, this boosted the morale and confidence of soldiers which encouraged them to fight for America. The inauguration of Truman was also not segregated, which showed the immediate effect of his policies all around the world as he had publicity. social The NAACP- the National association for the advancement of coloured people were a popular protest group that fought segregation and wanted to enfranchise black people with rights , between 1939 and 42, their members had grown from 50,000 to 450,000 so by 45 they were well established.Groups like these used methods involving both direct and indirect action. The indirect action the NAACP took were supporting people in their court cases to get the Supreme Court to take notice of the political incorrectness for  black people. Such cases included the 1944 Smith v Alwright which concerned the voting rights of black people in Texas, they were allowed to vote in congressional elections but not primary elections- which were more important as it determined the winning candidate. The case was taken to the Supreme Court and the 15th amendment states that all citizens have the right to vote so the case was won and all white primary elections were outlawed throughout the whole of America. In 1946, the case of Morgan v Virginia was regarding the segregation of interstate bus services, she was fined for not giving up her seat for a white person and she argued her constitutional rights were violated. This was taken to the Supreme Court and her case was won, segregation on transport was ruled illegal. in1950, Sweatt v Painter was a case about a black student wanting to study law, but was refused admission in Texas, a new law school was built for black students only, but this was shown to be inferior to the white school so Sweatt was able to register for the Texas law school and so the case was a success. The Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka in 1954 showed how black children werent being provided with an adequate education, and that segregation had a negative effect on black children. It was recognised that southern states failed to provide an education and the racist education system didnt reflect on the ideals on America, so the decision was reached due to a change in leadership of the Supreme Court, Earl Warren replaced the deceased judge and he was much more sympathetic so used his authority to persuade desegregation. This case was a major stepping stone for black people, however there was a lot of white backlash, southern racists were provoked, like the KKK and white citizens council. The case was re opened for Brown II in 1955 as desegregation was not happening fast enough especially in southern states so it was argued a timetable needed to be implemented. The Brown case also demonstrated how the new President Eisenhower (from 1953) was unwilling to help, and showed how de jure change had little de facto change in the Southern states especially. economic Much like when slavery was still legal, the primary jobs for African Americans in the south were in agriculture, where they would work for very low pay and as a result remain very poor. However war had forced the south to spend over $4.5 billion creating factories for war goods, blacks couldnt  get jobs in them at first though due to racism and prejudice on the part of those hiring (a social issue). But this was resolved in 1941 when President Roosevelt, under the threat of black activism issued an executive order creating the Fair Employment Practices Commission (FEPC). The FEPC forced industries not to discriminate on the grounds of race, creed, colour or national origin. This had made the economic situation for blacks better but it wasnt to last as many were fired from their war time jobs to be replaced with returning white servicemen. Still, the war period had vastly improved the economic situation for African Americans on the whole, this can be proved on statistics alone; the number of unemployed African Americans in 1940 was 937,000 but fell to 151,000 in 1945, showing a huge improvement. Simply due to the lower income made by blacks in both the North and South meant they were forced into substandard housing (Ghettos) as they were unable to afford better. In the North blacks were predominantly industrial workers and during war time there was a second wave of black migration from South to North (the first being ‘The Great Migration’). Again proved by statistics; in 1940 a quarter of African Americans lived in the North (primarily in industrial cities such as Philadelphia), but by 1950 it was nearly a third (a migration of about 500,000 during the war), this was driven by the war boom. It must still be kept in mind that although it jobs were better in the North the situation was still not ideal, blacks would earn, on average, 50% less than their white colleagues and it was common for whites to object to the promotion of African Americans. Finally whites were still more likely to be employed over blacks and example of this is in New York, where 6% of white men were unemployed compared to 10% of black men.

Integrated Library System-Free-Samples-Myassignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Integrated Library System. Answer: Introduction The report is based on implementation of an integrated library system (ILS) which provides librarys business operations. The public library system is combined with vendor supported as well as customized system with the librarys original homegrown system. Tarhini, Ammar and Tarhini (2015) stated that business analysis is detailed study of different operations that are performed by the business and its relationships in and outside of the system. During this analysis, data are collected on different files; decision points as well as transactions are to be handled by the existing library system. This particular report analyses a facilitation of customization of ILS modules. It also discusses an abstract view of the activities that are performed into six core knowledge areas of the business analysis. It also evaluates competencies as well as tools that are used to conduct knowledge areas. Business analysis planning and monitoring for ILS system Plan business analysis approach ILS system uses of librarys system development life cycle methodology for implementing and maintaining a higher quality system to meet customers expectations. Project management life cycle ensures that this project plan is within estimated resources, planned schedule as well as scope (Yeh and Walter 2016). The project manager analyzes the functional requirements of ILS system. It provides detailed specifications on system design. Into the development phase, design of ILS is converted into IT system. Testing is done to validate whether the developed system meets with business requirements. Plan stakeholder engagement Library Staff Members: The staff members are responsible to purchase as well as acquire of books, periodicals and movies. They have entered the information into the library system as well as established a unique barcode for each of the library items. Librarians: The roles of librarians are to provide access to the library information system. They are associated with collection of books and meet with technological requirements (Fleisher and Bensoussan 2015). They are also deal with maintenance of information such as books, magazines, recordings of audio and video, manuscripts and others. Business Analyst: They have planned, monitored and simplified the business requirements to implement an integrated library system. The business analyst analyzes the requirements of the system into the public library. Plan business analysis governance In the governance structure, the business analyst plays a key significant role into implementation of library system. The analyst understands the customer drivers and business process requirements (Eva et al. 2014). They have in-depth knowledge on functioning of the proposed system. They have also validated the solutions developed and meet with clients requirements Plan business analysis information management Each of the patrons as well as items within the ILS has unique ID into the database that permits the system to track the activities. It helps to keep record of the entire library transactions of books available within the library (Tarhini, Ammar and Tarhini 2015). Library information management system keeps records of various books, journals, classifies the books subject sensible and keeps detailed information on all books. Identify business analysis performance improvements Technical feasibility is done to identify if the ILS system is technically feasible or not. It is not difficult to get required resources for development as well as maintenance of the proposed system. The operational cost of the ILS system is less than current library system that includes of materials equipments, overhead cost as well as human resources (Vera-Baquero, Colomo-Palacios and Molloy 2016). Favorable hardware as well as software is utilized to make the proposed system feasible. Core competencies of ILS system The core competencies are administration and management work, trends into public librarianship, public services, collection development and technical services. The proposed system can also track the items owned, payment of bills and patrons those have borrowed. ILS system consists of relational database and software to interact with database plus graphical user interfaces. Business analysis tools for ILS system Following are the tools used for development of ILS system are: Business analysis performance assessment: It reviews the entire project plan and incorporates with planning approaches of the system. Business process modeling: It represents sequential workflow of the informational decisions that are taken for business process (Fleisher and Bensoussan 2015). Elicitation and Collaboration Prepare for elicitation The ILS system is updating the old library system in an internet based application such that the users can know detailed information about their library accounts, availability of books and maximum time to borrow it. This system is used for use of librarians and users. The system is used to manage books, insertion as well as monitoring (Loepp, Hussein and Ziegler 2014). Conduct elicitation By conducting the elicitation on ILS, it provides access to the detailed library records and repeated tracking of the information of borrowers. It also maintains supply stock information of the library items in the system to make sure that stock are not running out (Muhammad and Darwish 2014). It also updates the library with latest books, journals and newspapers. The goal of this proposed system is to facilitate administrative activities as well as information management works within the library. Confirm elicitation results It is validated the requirements of the stakeholders are matching with the updated system requirements. Document analysis is done to review the documented outputs with stakeholders to make sure that the business analysts understanding conforms towards actual desires of the stakeholders. Communicate business analysis information The communication platform to communicate all the business related information on system development is done through group and individual collaboration. In group collaboration, the information is communicated with group of business stakeholders at a time (Loepp, Hussein and Ziegler 2014). In individual collaboration, the information is communicated with single business stakeholders at a time. Email is also used to mail all the information to all stakeholders and there is no requirement of verbal explanation. Manage stakeholder collaboration In order to collaborate with the stakeholders, a good communication plan is required to interact with all the business stakeholders. Weekly meeting is conducted to discuss the business related issues (Muhammad and Darwish 2017). The discussion meeting can manage the conflicts among the project stakeholders. Core competencies in elicitation and collaboration The responsibility of business analyst is elicitation of business requirements as those requirements would serve foundation for the solutions towards business needs (Konat, Sahraoui and Kolfschoten 2014). The purpose of elicitation and collaboration is to identify business requirements and elicitation techniques used. Business analysis tools for elicitation Brainstorming: It is a group creativity technique that provides final conclusion for the problems related to implementation of ILS (Chang, Harper and Terveen 2015). Document analysis: The librarys system requirement documents are reviewed by the business analyst. The documents are personal documents and public records (Fernndez-Tobas et al. 2016). Requirements life cycle management The library system provides a good graphical interface for the users as well as administrator that are operating on the system. The external interface requirement of proposed system is that it allows the system users to view quick reports and verifies the stock verification based on various criteria (Stark 2015). The administrator can customizable the user interfaces. The user interface is able to communicate with the user management modules and the interface must dedicate to login as well as logout modules. After implementation of library management system, the librarian and system user can easily access the library. The system performs member registration, validation, generation of report and transaction of books. Usability requirement is required to verify if the staffs can easily use the system. Core competencies in requirements life cycle management Technological core competencies are used to address the growing requirements of the customers to raise their technical competence. It allows for utilization of library resources. The technology core competencies are checklist of system, training as well as assessment (Campbell, Jardine and McGlynn 2016). Business analysis tools Decision analysis: This tool is used by the business analyst to make better decisions in difficult situations. It is used to recognize higher value requirements. Backlog management: This tool compares the requirements to prioritize it. With use of this tool, the project manager customizes the software based on teams requirements (Tao et al. 2014). trategy Analysis Analyzing the current state ILS is large enterprise software that is driving enterprise resource planning system. The current state of ILS is that the staffs can barcode the copies of single item such as copies of meticulous books at particular time with each of the copies receive sequentially numbered barcodes. Defining future state The proposed ILS is implemented with a new process of handling the barcodes, various copies of same items. Acquisitions module of new ILS needs information for each innovative item to be penetrated separately (Finkbeiner 2014). It means that the information for the library's collected works would entered 12 time i.e. once for each copy of the book. Assessing the risks Loss of data storage devices: Due to damage of the hard disk, there is possible that the data are stored might be lost. The solution is that the work done into the system should be kept a backup copy. People: The project plan does not have required people to have expertise to work into this implementation and development project (Johnson 2017). Training should be provided to people. Data communication: There is a communication gap among developed members of the project plan. Frequent meetings are conducted for better communication to be done. Development risk: There is non-availability of quality tools to make and monitor the plan (Ghezzi, Rangone and Balocco 2013). The software should be tested using system testing. Defining the change strategy Communication plan: All the stakeholders discuss the possible schedule and cost changes among them in weekly meetings. Core competencies for strategy analysis Internal analysis is done leads to competitive advantage as well as strategic competiveness. Implementation of the proposed system requires information gathering, feasibility study and applied of strategic tools. Business analysis tool Solution Performance Measures: It describes actual performance of the existing solutions of the proposed system (Grant 2016). New solutions to the problems and monitoring of results are required new system approaches. Requirements analysis and design definition Specification and model requirements All the project specifications and models are documented into requirement specification document. This document can specify all functional and performance requirements of the library system. Verification of requirements For implementation of ILS, system testing should be done. All the components of the system are tested such as hardware, software, storage and maintenance environments. It performs an audit of the codes (Dennis, Wixom and Tegarden 2015). The system documentation is revised to make sure that it is sufficient. Validation of requirements It is validated if the software is maintained properly or not. The errors as well as defects are identified, accurate and validated after the installation of the system. Define requirements architecture There is a requirement of use case diagram of the library management system. The architectural design should contain a member, update, add and issue of item, return of item options (Coduto 2015). Define solution options The solution options of proposed system are manage of book, member record, acquisitions, circulation and barcodes. Analyzing potential value and recommend solution The proposed system provides value to the academic librarians and staff members. The software is used to raise operational efficiency which provides great value to the business. Core competencies of requirements analysis and design definition Business analysis core concept model is used to describe relationships among the core concepts of the proposed system (Stark 2015).
