Dulce et Decorum est by Wilfred Owen: Experiences

However the most famous meter that Owen is renowned for is Dulce et Decorum Est Dulce et decorum Est Is a poem written by Wilfred Owen describing his experiences of WWI.The poem is titled Dulce et decorum est means it is sweet and fitting to die for ones country though the poem talks about something rattling opposite thus mocking the state custodyt and making it a grim comment foc manipulationd on those who ncourage conflict and proclaim It as being glorious. Dulce et Decorum Est reveals the truth behind conflict the grief and suffering It causes. The author with the use of graphic vision and diction tries to convey the horrors of conflict and war. It also shows the futility of conflict and in a quite explicit manner the true reality of terminalThe ideas the poet wants us to consider ar the horrors of war and Its sheer and utter futility. O wen also wants us to think about the propaganda that is put forward by the government and how it differs from the particular reality of conflict. The poet is trying to say if you do get through the war you must experience mental torture and live with guilt ALL your flavor long We know this when Owen writes In all my dreams. before my helpless sight he plunges at me guttering, choking, drowning. Owen is telling us that he is haunted by the men that died in the gas attack and he cant help them no matter how much he wants to.This poem has a miserable and gloomy atmosphere to it scarce like the earth which has an ozone layer around it. In this war poem the mood is very grim and poignant too. There is an effective use of allegory like a devils offensive of sin because it comp ars the situation to the devil. The devil Is known to be startle cause of sin but even If he Is sick of it then it MUST be very catastrophic There is also a great use of sibilance. This is effective because whe n said it will put accent on sick to explain how awful of a level the conflict had escalated to.There is a demolitionly air of resignation around which makes the reader lament the death of the soldiers. Owens pick of diction is used to create great effect. When he uses a simile in the irst line like old beggars under sacks. Soldiers are conjectural to be fit men and a comparison with old beggars indicates that they have been brought down to such a level that they are now equal of hunched, tired, unfed, homeless and old people. Even their uniforms have lost their militaristic crispness, as Owen describes them as sacks. This picture is a definite contrast to the idealized marching formations of OF3 mood.Owen again shows the weariness of the soldiers in the last line of that stanza when he say Of gas shells dropping softly behind which is very contrasting from ow gas shells actually drop. They make a loud hissing noise and can be heard from far. Thus Owen shows that the soldiers senses had dulled. Only a completely exhausted soldier with no strength could be in this state of mind to not have heard the gas shells. Another rather unusual choice of diction is coughing like hags, we unsaved through sludge. The simile coughing like hags suggests the men were unhealthy.The position that Owen compares them to hags who are old ugly women suggests that the war has made youthful and healthy into dependable for nothing women ho have a permanent coughing fit due to old age and illness. But limped on, blood- shod. All went lame all screenland gives the feeling that these men have become dehumanized and are reduced to an animal-like state. Thus arousing the question as to how could this is glorious. A side theme is highlighted in the first stanza as to how do young and robust men with bright futures reduced to old ragged men benefit the nationThe graphic and vivid imagery used by Owen in the poem, gives the reader a feeling of horror and makes them question as to ho w humans could do such atrocities. In lines 9-14 there is a change of pace. First the repetition of the monosyllabic word/ onomatopoeia gas which echoes the sound of gun fire and then the oxymoron, ecstasy of fumbling, seems a odd choice of diction, but later turns out to be perfect, as Owen uses it to describe the controlled panic instantly awakened with keen awareness- of youthful men with Just seconds to find a gas mask. Owen uses a metaphor when he says As under a green sea I saw him drowning.This is an extended metaphor which is used to a great extent because it enhances the readers nderstanding of the feeling of being trapped by poisonous gas. This man dies gruesomely after he inhales the gas, ironically showing how helpless and weak a human is against a man made weapon. In the next stanza Owen uses a metaphor guttering, choking, drowning. This is a very gruesome image for life flitter out. These graphic images are very disturbing but play a very effective role in the persua sion of readers to think that conflict is very futile and horrific.Owen uses one of the most descriptive, gruesome and horrifying imagery in the last stanza. When he ses phrases like white eyes writhing in his face,, at every Jolt the blood, come gargling from the froth corrupted lungs/ obscene as cancer bitter as cud. Phrases like these can scud the hardest of men. The graphic images displayed are profoundly affecting and can never be forgotten. Owens use of excellent imagery can sway many readers into be guileving that wars are the worst things that can happen and how dreadful a death a human could face.Owen ties the poem when he says in the last two lines the Old lie Dulce et Decorum est pro patria mort. When Owen has inished his sentence, we understand that there is nothing sweet and fitting to die for ones country. Owen thus creates a Juxtapose, leaving the reader with the feeling of disgust and repulsion. And also shows that conflict can lead to such horrendous and tragic con sequences. poem, making war seem absolutely horrid and revolting, which is Just what Owen wanted to do. Reading this poem left me gasping and shocked. The fact that Owen talks about the illnesses the men endure, within the simile coughing like hags.This helps me to see that the men were in horrendous conditions. The poem shows the callosity of war and absolutely condemns the saying that it is sweet and fitting to fight for ones country. Owens graphic vivid imagery and diction completely ousts all positive words and feelings towards conflict. The fact that I know that Owen was killed one week before the completion of WWI makes it all the poignant as well as the fact that many people are currently indulged in conflict, as we speak, around the world. It makes me ponder on the fact that war will perpetually be glorified and unfortunately, there will always be conflict

The line has two comas in it, to slow the sentence down and really emphasise what Dickinson is saying, the comas also make us question the puritan beliefs. The capital letter of Faith makes it something important and gi ves it a status. Similarly in poem 258 Dickinson says That oppresses, like the Heft/Of Cathedral Tunes- this line shows that the puritan values such as the cathedral tunes oppress people and put down there individualism.The word Heft associates to something heavy or burden like, this shows how Dickinson attacks puritans since she is saying there traditions are suppressing, she also capitalises Heft giving it a heavy and downwards feel, the capital letter almost literally puts a burden on the reader. Dickinson puts a dash at the end of this line since it shows a unfinished feeling and shows that their traditions are incomplete and they are never ending. Overall Dickinson does attack puritan values and mocks them. She repeatedly shows them to be oppressing and incomplete in the sense that puritans themselves are unaware of there teahings and faith.

Book Review: Human Communication as Narration

In perhaps his most important contribution to rhetorical theory and the arrest of human intercourse, Walter black cat presents an explanation of his annals paradigm in Human Communication as Narration Toward a Philosophy of Reason, Value and Action. This more inclusive account of human communication together with the view that all human communication needs to be seen as stories sets the foundation for Fishers theory of narratives. In presenting the main points of his narrative theory over several chapters, Fisher explains that worldly concern experience and understand life as a series of ongoing narratives, and that these stories are symbolic interpretations of aspects of the world that are historically and culturally grounded and shaped by human personality (p. 9). Given that stories are more than just a figure of speech and have the power to both inform and influence, Fisher establishes narrative rationality as a universal logic and actor for the assessment for stories that is accessible by nature to all human beings (p. 47). This assessment is tested against narrative probability (coherence) and fidelity (truthfulness and reliability) (p. 47) in some other words, humans come to believe in and act on stories in so much as they relate to and identify with them.Going back to his assertion that human communication doesnt have to exist in perfect structures of rhetorical arguments, he further explains that all humans possess the ability to reason and dissolve because both communicate and accept truth as intelligent reasons (p. 105). Perhaps an even better, more succinct explanation of this comes earlier in the book where Fisher states that the materials of the narrative paradigm are symbols, signs of consubstantiation, and good reasons are the communicative expression of social reality (p. 5). By including both formal logic and a logic of good reasons in the basis for argument, Fishers narrative paradigm contributes to rhetorical theory by expanding the meaning of persuasion just as Burkes theory of identification did. Since the average person isnt trained in formal logic, Fisher believed that the logic of good reasons (i. e. common sense), sits above all other persuasive means since it is universal and inherent in all human communication.Fisher goes on to assert that narrative rationality should also be the foundation on which a complete theory of rhetoric needs to be built (p. 194). In this sense, the selection of stories we tell and come to accept is demonstrative of who we are and what we need others to believe about us. In the final section of his book, Fisher applies his narrative rationality in several real-world case studies including the rhetoric of Ronald Reagan, Death of a Salesman, The capacious Gatsby and the philosophical discussion between Socrates and Callicles in Platos Gorgias.These examples provide a helpful demonstration of how narrative rationality can be used to assess the coherence, truthfulness and reliability of stories across a wide range of contexts. In conceptualizing and applying narrative rationality, Fisher contributes an important method for the study of narratives in a concoction of communication contexts, which is one of the most important contributions he makes to the study of communication. Through Human Communication as Narration, Fisher provided a more accessible, universal means for communicating and understanding human truth.Drawing inspiration from the works of Kenneth Burke, Alasdair MacIntyre, Stephen Toulmin and Chaim Perelman, Fishers narrative paradigm argues that formal logic and the positivist view are inadequately prepared to account for the motives and values in human communication. He offers a broader explanation that all forms of human communication are driven by and sprout from our inherent need to determine whether an accounting of new knowledge matches up with what we already know.In the 30 years since Human Communication as Narration was commencement exercise published, scholars and professionals from a wide range of disciplines have applied Fishers narrative paradigm in a variety of contexts. Narrative methods for rhetorical abstract and criticism have been used by Barbara Sharf (1990), Hollihan and Riley (1987), and Michael Cornfield (1992), among many others. In 1993, David Mains argued that the time was ripe for a move toward narrative sociology, which asserted that sociologys phenomena is do up precisely of stories (p. 2) as well as that sociologists are mainly narrators. The use of narratives as a means for persuasion in advertising and frequent relations has been widely documented in recent years by Cinzia Bianchi (2011) Barbara Stern, Craig Thompson and Eric Arnould (1998) and Melanie Green (2006). The narrative paradigm has also been deployed in interpersonal communication and organizational communication (Ashcraft & Pacanowsky, 1996). And a large body of research has been dedicated to the study of narratives as a strategy in conflict resolution as well (Gergen & Gergen, 2006 Sandole et al. 2009). These are just a few of the ways in which Fishers narrative paradigm still contributes to the understanding of human communication today. only while the narrative paradigm has enjoyed a renaissance of late with new research that refines and extends the theory (Currie, 2005 Kirkwood, 1992 McClure, 2009 Stroud, 2002), largely due to its growing multi-disciplinary interest as ren ingested above, it has also attracted much criticism. But while these scholars recognized its value, they have also demonstrated that it is not as useful for critical analysis as it aimed to be.Stroud (2002) found issue with the lack of account for contradiction in stories when assessing narrative rationality. Kirkwood (1992) tangle that Fishers narrative rationality is limiting in that it doesnt stomach for the possibilities of new stories to be accepted and acted upon. He goes on to argue that a rhetoric of possibility presented through narratives can better account for how rhetors challenge multitude with new and unsuspected possibilities of being and action in the world (Kirkwood, 1992, p. 31).McClure (2009) also specifically argued that the narrative paradigm must also account for the inventional possibilities of new narratives, the rhetorical revision of old narratives, and the appeal and acceptance of improbable narrative accounts (p. 191). He also asserts that by expanding the role of Burkes identification, the narrative paradigm can become a more viable theory an d method of criticism. While several scholars have both praised and criticized Fishers narrative paradigm, the part of his story that related to narratives origins, philosophical foundation and relevance to human communication rang true for me.In my study of rhetorical theory I, too, have often felt that the structures of formal argument are too constricting and limiting in their ability to interpret all forms of persuasive communication. When using Fishers own narrative rationality to measure the coherence and fidelity of Human Communication as Narration, I find it to be both coherent and true oddly from my viewpoint as a woman living in a post-modern, post-structuralist society who works in the field of public relations where stories are the precise fabric of our communication strategies.And while I recognize the validity of the proposed extensions of his theory by Kirkwood (1992), McClure (2009) and Stroud (2002), I feel they also serve as proof points for the reproductive po wer of Fishers paradigm in new ways of thinking about stories.
